NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – Craven Community College will now be offering a scholarship named in part to honor a New Bern police officer shot and killed last year.

The Veteran Enforcers Motorcycle Association gave $1,650 to go towards the Fallen Officer Memorial Scholarship. The award will go to an applicant picked in the college’s Basic Law Enforcement Training program.

The group raised the money during a memorial ride back in April held for New Bern’s fallen officer Alexander Thalmann. Around 175 riders participated.

Spokesman Nick Yates says the scholarships will be available every year.

“We’re hoping as it continues to grow,” explained Nick Yates. “We’re wanting to pull in more and more of the area. So we’re thinking this year we honored Alex and next year we might honor a State Trooper or a county Deputy Sheriff or something like that.”
