Second-busiest day for December holiday travel begins

COLUMBUS (WCMH/AP) – If you’re planning on traveling for the holidays today, you’re not alone.

Thursday is the second busiest travel day for December, coming in second to Saturday, Dec. 23. According to TripAdvisor’s Annual Holiday Travel Survey, 45% of respondents are traveling for Christmas this year, a 6% increase from 2016. The survey also found that more travelers are choosing to fly this holiday season, with 39% heading to the airports.

If you’re driving, you can expect to have company on the roads as well. TripAdvisor said that 56% of those surveyed said they would be driving, with half of those driving traveling up to 200 miles.

The holiday travel rush comes after a massive blackout at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world’s busiest airport, on Sunday. The outage stranded thousands of travelers for nearly 11 hours and forced the cancellation of more than 1,500 flights.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport general manager Roosevelt Council Jr. said in a statement on Wednesday that the outage happened after circuit cables and switching mechanisms were damaged in a fire caused by a failed piece of equipment in an underground electrical facility.
