Onslow County, NC (WNCT) – Seven people were injured in a head-on crash that happened Saturday evening.

The Highway Patrol responded to Gum Branch Road at approximately 5:30pm. Troopers tell WNCT 30 year old Nicholas Matthews was driving a BMW and crossed the center of Gum Branch Road. He struck a Honda Pilot head-on, which ran off the road and flipped on its side.

Matthews had two passengers in his car, including an infant. Both passengers were taken to the hospital. Matthews was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.

The driver of the Honda Pilot was identified as Franklin Toole. Toole and the three people inside his car were taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital. One of Toole’s passengers was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Gum Branch Road reopened two hours after the crash.

Troopers tell WNCT Matthews is expected to be charged.
