SNOW HILL, N.C. (WNCT) – A argument over a car led to a man shooting and killing two of his family members Tuesday night, according to Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith.
Myles Jefferson Duggins, 20, has been charged with two open counts of murder and the theft of a motor vehicle.
Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith said deputies responded to a call in reference to two subjects shot on Davis Grove Church Rd around 5:30 Tuesday night.
There, they found 68-year-old Johnny Boy Jefferson, Duggin’s grandfather, suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Duggin’s 6-year-old cousin Isaiah Thomas Hill was also shot and taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. He would have turned 7 next month.
Sheriff Lemmie Smith said Duggins shot Jefferson and Hill after an argument over Jefferson’s car turned violent.
Duggins lived at the home, and the shooting happened in the backyard of the house.
After the shooting, Smith said Duggins stolethe car and fled to Raleigh. Duggins was taken into custody by Raleigh police a few hours later.
Smith said during questioning Duggins admitted to the shootings and showed no remorse. Duggins did not have a criminal background, and there were no calls to the house prior to Tuesday night.
He’s being held at the Greene County Detention Center under no bond.
The family released the following statement:
“This tragedy has many layers for us and includes not just the sudden and tragic death of our father Johnny B. Jefferson and our brother Isaiah, but also the the immense weight of the involvement of our nephew Myles Jefferson Duggins. At this time as we grieve the immense circumstances we encourage families to have serious conversations about mental illness.”
Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting near Snow Hill.
The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon at a home on Davis Grove Church Road
Family members tell 9 On Your Side a man in his 60’s has died from his injuries.
Latasha Williams said multiple bullets also struck a 6-year-old boy who was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for treatment.
Williams identified the child as the grandson of the man killed. She said the boy is in critical condition after surgery Tuesday evening.
Williams said she can’t understand why this would happen. “No, I can’t because he gave the world to his grandkids,” Williams said, “I mean for this to happen it just blows our mind. We never thought in a million years that this would happen.”
Family members confirm a relative identified as Miles Bergen has been taken into custody in Raleigh in connection with the shooting.
The Greene County Sheriff’s office is investigating the case.
