ERWIN, N.C. (WNCN) – Triton High School and the Erwin community came together Wednesday night to remember two students who died in a crash Tuesday night.

The pair were well known, beloved students.

And so, Wednesday night dozens came together to try to wrap their minds around what’s happened so close to the end of the school year

“He was my pride and joy,” said Willie Wood.

Wood talked about her grandson – 16 year old Kirby Preston Wood.

The North Carolina  State Highway Patrol says Preston was driving on Ash Avenue when he lost control, over corrected and crashed into a tree. The car he was in with Kzon Crenshaw was split in two.

“He was loving. He showed you. He showed you he loved you. You know he’d joke with you and carry on,” Wood said.

Wood’s best friend – 18 year old Kzon Crenshaw – was taken by helicopter to Wake Med.

“Everyone was like Kzon’s got this. He beat cancer. He done all this. Like maybe he can get through this,” said Harley Ryals, a Triton junior. “We were so excited just to hear him breathing again,” she added.

He beat cancer … But this time was different. Crenshaw died at the hospital.

“And then we get a call at 3 in the morning and it just shocked everyone. People were on the ground crying in the hospital last night,” Ryals said.

Wednesday evening friends gathered. First at the scene of the crash and later at the high school.

They prayed, the wiped away tears and they tried to console one another. Afterwards they spray painted Kzon’s parking spot at Triton High.

“Just bring us all together through the hard times, shows we really need each other,” said Austin cooper, a Triton High senior.

“Doesn’t matter who you are. Everybody loves each other,” said Curtis Cooper, a junior at the school.

“If there are any of you kids out there that drive rough please stop,” Grandmother Wood said.

Kzon was set to graduate Saturday. Friends said a ceremony will be held at the graduation for both of them.

Kzon’s parents are expected to attend and will accept his diploma posthumously.
