GREENVILLE, N.C. (ECU Media Relations) – Twenty-four hours after conducting its first official fall practice, East Carolina returned to Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex Friday afternoon for a two-and-half hour workout.
The Pirates spent the period in shorts and helmets, which they will do again Saturday afternoon before transitioning into the next stage of their preparation by putting on shoulder pads Sunday.
“Great day of effort and work out on the field,” said first-year head coach Scottie Montgomery. “Our defense came out with a chip on their shoulders after yesterday’s practice and won the day. The pace of practice has been hard on some of the guys, but the senior leadership has pulled the team through these first couple of days with the warm temperatures. Schematics changed a little bit from yesterday to today, but the pace was definitely better.”
The day began with a team meal followed by treatments, positional meetings to review practice film, a team meeting with Coach Montgomery, a special teams install session and then lunch.
Just like Thursday, Montgomery and his staff broke up the practice into two groups with the veterans going the first hour followed by the newcomers. The Pirates started the session with a pair of six-minute group segments before moving into 12 minutes of routes vs. air with the receivers and secondary units.
The first of two team breakouts concentrated on the running game (10 minutes), which preceded 1-on-1 receivers and defensive backs group work and an eight-minute 7-on-7 skeleton period. The final team stanza (10 minutes) was centered on first-and-10 situations before a final special teams segment (five minutes) and team conditioning (five minutes).
After dinner, ECU returned to the meeting rooms going over special team assignments and reviewing group practice from the afternoon before retiring to Tyler Hall for the evening.
Prior to Saturday’s afternoon workout, ECU will hold its annual Media Day inside the Murphy Center. Montgomery will provide his annual season-opening address that will outline the latest roster additions and deletions, personnel status and possible position changes.
