A Halifax County middle school teacher was charged with child abuse after the sheriff’s office said he threw an object, hitting a student in the face. 

Willie Hawkins, who was a teacher at Enfield Middle School, was arrested Oct. 12 and charged with child abuse inflicting serious injury, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said. 

The student was hit in the face by an object thrown by Hawkins, officials said. It is not clear when the incident occurred. 

Hawkins, 28, was taken to the Halifax County Detention Center where he received a $1,500 bond. 

He is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 7.
