Teen charged in accidental shooting death of baby in Cumberland County

Cumberland County Baby Shot

Newly-released 911 calls describe it as a deadly accident after a three-week-old baby girl was shot dead in Cumberland County Friday evening.

A teenager has since been arrested and charged with the baby’s death.

It all happened at a house on Cricket Road near Hope Mills and Rockfish around 7:15 Friday night.

The 911 callers told the operator it wasn’t supposed to happen.

“I didn’t see the gun – I swear I didn’t see it, it was a gun, the baby got shot, oh my God, oh my God the baby got shot,” said a caller to 911.

Another caller also described what happened.

“He didn’t mean to, it must be in a bag of my husband’s and he just picked it up and it went off,” said another caller.

Cumberland County deputies are not saying who the callers were, nor releasing the names of anyone involved.

But neighbors say they could hear and see the chaotic scene.

Many neighbors are now saying they’re praying for the family.

“I was devastated, even though it wasn’t my child, I immediately went to ‘what if that happened to my kid’,” said neighbor Nicole Berry.

“I would be so heartbroken, and I am heartbroken for that mom, especially with the baby only being three weeks, that’s something you don’t recover from,” Berry added.

The baby was immediately taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
