GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – A transgender suicide hotline says there’s been a spike in distress calls since our state passed House Bill 2.

Trans Lifeline reports receiving double the calls this month compared to data from last month, before the law passed on March 23rd.

Forty-one percent of transgender people attempt suicide at least once in their lifetime, compared to less than five percent of the general population.

“We have to look at what is best for that community, so that we can help them transition and be able to be a part of the existing community that they are living in, that they are working in,” said local psychotherapist, Dr. Leon Johnson.

Trans Lifeline, a nonprofit, is the only transgender crisis hotline in the United States.
