Those who fought for our country’s freedom are receiving a generous Christmas donation from a Jacksonville organization.
Early Monday morning, the Costal North Carolina Veterans Foundation Chapter 642 and the Purple Hearts organization teamed up to reimburse troops in the Onslow County area.
The gist was given to servicemen and women who were wounded in combat while in Iraq and Afghanistan –a tradition that has been going on for about 13 years.
It began with hundreds of troops receiving checks, but for the past few years the number of people walking through the doors has declined.
We haven’t had a fundraiser in over four years because we had so much money in the pot and so many fewer troopers that were being wounded that we had enough to take care of it,” said Tom Braaten, retired Major General Marine Corp.
It is not anticipated that there will another date for this event this year.
