Tyrrell County man charged with starving dog to death

A Columbia man is facing felony charges after it’s alleged that he starved one of his dogs to death.

On Monday, October 1, The Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on River Neck road, in Columbia, for a report of animal abuse.

When they arrived at the home, they found four dogs in a pen that appeared to be severely emaciated and dehydrated. A fifth dog was found dead and decomposing in a barrel in the same pen.

The five dogs were plott hounds.

Tyrrell County Animal Control seized the four dogs that were still alive, and transported them to a local veterinarian for emergency treatment.

As a result of the investigation, deputies charged 48-year-old Warren Davenport with felony killing of an animal by starvation, and four counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals.

Davenport was released on a $10,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear back in court on October 24.
