CAMP LEJEUNE, NC (WNCT) – A company identified a worker who died following a workplace accident aboard Camp Lejeune.

Marine officials told WNCT it happened on Monday at the Camp Johnson location on the base.

SPC Mechanical released a statement saying Rafael Santiago, 58, died after falling at the Staff NCO Academic Facility.

Spokesman Tim Williford told WNCT that the company has a mechanical contract with the base and was working on HVAC units

The Wilson based company says Santiago and others had been cutting a hole in the floor of the building and Santiago fell through it to the second floor. It was about a 25 feet fall.

Williford said the company met with base officials and federal officials on Tuesday afternoon. OSHA and company representatives walked the site on Wednesday.

“Rafael was dedicated and hard working,” said SPC Mechanical Wilson Division Manager Jay Gunter in a release. “He was a good man and we mourn for him and and his family.”

Son Rogelio Santiago said, “He was the best dad and grandfather. We are heartbroken and miss him very much.”

A final report is expected in the next few months.
