UPDATE: Truck driver in fair condition after 18-wheeler overturns

TRENTON, NC (WNCT)-  A truck driver remains at Vidant Medical Center Sunday morning, after his log truck overturned Saturday morning on Highway 41 in Jones County.

Trooper Phillip Edwards with Highway Patrol says around 10:00 a.m., an 18-wheeler carrying logs went left of the center median when the truck struck another 18-wheeler carrying a gas tank.

Edwards says the log truck then went sideways and overturned in a ditch on the side of the road.

Trooper Edwards tells WNCT the driver of the log truck, Fredrick Cecil Koonce, was trapped under his log truck for roughly an hour. When the Jones Co. Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene, he was flown to Vidant Medical Center.

As of early Sunday morning, Koonce was listed in fair condition at the hospital.

Koonce is charged with driving left of center.

The scene has been cleared. The investigation is still ongoing.
