KINSTON, NC (WNCT): The USDA is proposing a rule that affects stores accepting SNAP or EBT benefits.

Right now, stores accepting EBT only need three varieties of healthy foods in four food groups. The proposed rule would require seven varieties in five food groups.

Under the rule, if a store doesn’t offer the wide variety of healthy options, it won’t be able to accept EBT.

At Red Apple Convenience Store in Kinston, healthy food options are available, but store employees say they need more shelving to carry additional fruits and vegetables.

“It depends on what kind of shelf we get,” said Annie Simmons, employee at Red Apple. “If we get a shelf where we can have more, I guess so. We’ll have more. But if we don’t get a shelf, no.”

The proposed rule is still under review.
