Today, people in Pitt County got a greater understanding of what it is like to live with dementia.
A virtual reality tour gave people a glimpse of the physical and mental challenges those with dementia face.
“The purpose is so that caregivers can realize what it is that it feels to live with dementia, so that the people living with demtnia can get better care,” registered nurse Rubi Merino said.
People wore headphones, gloves, glasses, and placed inserts in their shoes to alter their senses to reflect what someone with dementia would experience.
Many people who came out to the tour said they are close to someone with dementia.
They said this tour gave them a better understanding and empathy for their loved one.,
“It is very hard number,” Greenville resident Dede Carny said. “The slightest little thing or little task becomes almost impossible at times because of the either physical changes in your body or outside distractions going on and how that impacts what you are trying to do or just order your day.”
The idea is to give caregivers an idea of the feeling someone with dementia faces.
