Family and friends of a Pitt County student who died last weekend will begin to say their final goodbyes on Friday.

17-year-old DH Conley student Devantae Dortch died after jumping into the Tar River.
A vigil was held by friends and former football teammates earlier this week.

In a chapel filled with students, faculty and family of the DH Conley community, the young man was remembered for his laugh, his high spirits and love he showed on and off the field.

“He was a great guy man. He was strong, he was big for no reason, but he was a great teammate,” Roberto Concepcion said.

Concepcion and Isaiah Artist played side by side with Dortch.

Many of his teammates showed up to a vigil Wednesday night, all heartbroken for losing someone passionate about life, despite its obstacles.

“He’s so funny, a cool dude.” Terrill Daniels said “I’ve never met somebody that had that much fun with a hearing impairment. He didn’t let that stop him.”

Scheduled Services

Dortch’s wake will be held Friday at Congleton Funeral Home on East 10th Street in Greenville from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church on Allen Road in Greenville at 1 p.m.

A vigil is scheduled for Wednesday at New Destiny Church in Greenville at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dortch allegedly drowned after he jumped into the Tar River and never resurfaced.

A GoFundMe account has been started in Dortch’s name to help his family.
