Winterville Fire-Rescue-EMS is celebrating a major achievement.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal upgraded Winterville’s insurance rating.
The ratings come once every 10 years or so.
The higher rating suggests that the department is overall better-equipped to respond to fires in the district.
“It is a very exciting time for our department,” assistant chief Tony Smart said. “It shows what we are bringing to the table to help the community and citizens we serve.
Smart said their well-trained staff and personnel, as well as solid equipment, are all things the state looks at when assessing fire districts.
After the latest assessment, Winterville jumped from a six to a three rating.
The closer to one, the better.
Smart said the only other department that’s achieved a rating of three in Pitt County is Greenville Fire/Rescue.
“For ours to be assigned a three, with a population of 10,000 or so in Winterville, speaks volumes to the commitment of people we have working for us,” Smart said.
Not only does the rating suggest the department is better suited to respond to fires, but better ratings can also significantly lower insurance rates.
“It obviously has a financial impact on any person that pays any type of fire insurance whether it is business or residential,” Smart said. “It will be a remarkable amount of savings.”
Smart said the department will keep striving to improve.
“We are hoping to continue to grow and support the community and give everyone that lives here the best possible response and best possible service we can,” Smart said.
The new rating goes into effect on August 1.
