Deputies: Man tried to sexually assault underage girl in Pitt County

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) --- A Grimesland man has been charged after the Pitt County Sheriff's Office said he tried to sexually assault an underage girl.

Michael Wayne Moore, 34, was arrested Monday around 3 p.m. and charged with solicitation to commit first degree statutory rape of a child under 13 by an adult and one count of solicitation to commit first-degree statutory sex offense with a child.

On June 12, a person contacted the Pitt County Sheriff's Office and told the Sheriff's Office Moore asked for help finding and sexually assaulting an underage child.

Detectives looked investigated the tip, leading to Moore's arrest.

"It's upsetting to know that we have people in our community with such vile thoughts and the propensity to go as far as to try to solicit someone to help them lure a child into the woods for the purpose of rape," said Maj. Paula Dance, with the Pitt County Sheriff's Office.

Moore is being held in lieu of $400,000 bail.
