Kinston Police: Man found on East Caswell Street died of natural causes

Kinston police said that a man found on East Caswell Street died of natural causes.

The Kinston Police Department responded to assist an EMS call at the 600 block of East Caswell Street on Tuesday around 3:40 a.m.

Police arrived on the scene and said they found a black male unconscious and bleeding.

The victim, identified as 58-year-old Thomas Burney Jr. was pronounced dead on the scene.

After an examination by the medical examiner conducted on Wednesday, Burney’s death has been determined to be of natural causes. 


Kinston Police have identified the victim of a suspicious death that happened on East Caswell Street early Tuesday morning.

Investigators say 58-year-old Thomas Burney Jr., of Kinston, was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at a home in the 600 block of East Caswell Street.

Kinston Police detectives say at 3:40 a.m. Tuesday, officers and EMS personnel responded to a call at that location about a black male who was unconscious and bleeding.

Burney’s cause of death will be determined by the NC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
