Man charged, victim hospitalized after shots fired in Elizabeth City

One man was hospitalized and another man charged after a shots fired incident on Thursday night in Elizabeth City.

Elizabeth City police say at 8:33 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to a call about gunshots being fired near the 1200 block of Moseley Street.

Near the scene, in the 1200 block of Shiloh Street, officers found a man, whose name has not been released, with what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The victim was taken to Sentara Albemarle Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury.

Officers later found and arrested Mr. Waykeem Layquan Shelton, 17, of 928 Shillingtown Road, and charged him with Shooting in the City Limits and Violation of a Domestic Violence Protective Order.

Shelton was taken to the Albemarle District Jail under a $1,500 bond and a 48-hour hold for the Violation of Domestic Violence Protective Order.
