KINSTON, N.C (WNCT) — Kinston police officers involved in a shooting Saturday have been placed on administrative leave with pay.

The shooting happened Saturday around 9:30 p.m. while Kinston police officers Sgt. B. Wells, Officer M. Aiken, Officer T. Williams and Officer D. Martin were conducting directed patrols in the Towerhill Road area.

The officers encountered 44-year-old Anthony Hicks of Kinston.  During that encounter, gunshots were fired and Hicks was struck.

Hicks has been transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC, where he is recovering from non-life threatening injuries. No officers were hit.

Ella Gomez lives in the area and knows her neighbors have recently asked for additional directed patrols in the area.

“It’s good anywhere,” said Gomez. “I don’t care what town; it’s just good to have police.”

But the recent officer involved shooting that sent one man to hospital has her shaken up.

“It’s just scary, you know, I get off of work and come home and can’t even get to your house cause so much is going on,” Gomez said.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to call the Kinston Police Department at (252) 939-3160 or Lenoir County Crime Stoppers at (252) 523-4444.
