Barbers and Backpacks: Pitt Community College gets kids school-ready

School Watch

With school coming up next week, kids in Greenville got the chance to get a fresh haircut and a new backpack free of charge.

Pitt Community College hosted their eighth annual “50 free” event at the Altitude Academy Hair Studio Wednesday.

After the haircut is complete, the client has the chance to pick out a new backpack and pick up some new school supplies.

Haircuts were done by barber students at the college.

“It’s a good way for the students to get practice with their skills, but there again, it’s also a good way for them to give back to the community,” said Gail Nichols, coordinator for entrepreneurial education.

Last year the team provided around 150 haircuts.

They said they hope to exceed that number this year.
