Pitt Co BOE holds emergency meeting to discuss school safety

The Pitt County Board of Education held an emergency meeting early Thursday morning to discuss school safety.

They had to compile a priority list of what should be funded towards school safety

The first priority on the list was more school resource officers, followed by secured corridors, school counselors, internal cameras, and last on the list bus cameras.

The request of the list comes from the county commissioners so that it could be presented to them in their meeting right afterward.

Most Board of Education members seemed to be on the same page when it came to prioritizing.

“We can have wonderful teachers, wonderful supplies wonderful program, but if the kids go to school and they do not feel safe that is not a conducive environment,” said Worth Forbes, a member of the Board of Education.

There were some reservations about putting school resource officers at the top of the list, because of funding.

Unlike cameras or secured corridors, SRO’s would need to be continuously funded.

At the commissioners meeting held right after the emergency meeting commissioners said the list was very helpful and they will send their final recommendation to the county manager May 7.
