Lane Hoover tallied three hits, while the trio of Spencer Brickhouse, Ryan Giles and Jake Washer each drove in a pair helping No. 11 ECU to a 10-7 win over ODU Wednesday night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. With the win, the Pirates improve to 31-10 and extends their current win streak to six games while the Monarchs fall to 24-16.

ECU struck first in the third inning scoring a pair of runs for an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. Hoover singled to start the frame and took second on Giles’ sac bunt. Dusty Baker doubled down the right field line pushing across Hoover for the game’s first run. Two batters later Brady Lloyd reached on a throwing error by ODU starter Jason Hartline allowing Baker to score from second base.

Alec Burleson (4-1) earned the win on a staff night allowing one run (earned) on three hits with a pair of walks and three punch outs in four innings. Garrett Saylor picked up his first collegiate save working one-third of a frame retiring the only batter he face. ECU used four others in relief getting outings from Evan Odum (0.0 IP, 3 Hs, 1 R), Gavin Williams (3.0 IP, 1 H, 2 Ks), Cam Colmore (0.2 IP, 1 H) and Carter Spivey (1.0 IP, 4 Hs, 5 Rs).

Hartline (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season surrendering two runs (one earned) on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. The Monarchs, also on a staff day, used six arms out of the bullpen in Matt Busher (0.1 IP, 3 Hs, 3 Rs), Morgan Maguire (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BBs), Hunter Gregory (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 Ks), Isaiah Nelson (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 Rs, 1 BB), Aaron Holiday (1.0 IP, 2 Hs, 3 Rs, 2 BBs, 1 K) and Michael Parmentier (1.0 IP, 2 Hs, 1 K).

The Pirates extended their lead to four plating two runs in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage. Turner Brown singled to get things going and moved to second on Burleson’s groundout to first. Jake Washer followed with a single back up the middle scoring Brown. With the bases juiced and two outs, Bryant Packard plated a run when he was hit by a Maguire pushing across Washer.

ODU finally got on the board in the home half of the fourth on the first of two Will Morgan solo home runs pulling within three, 4-1.

Washer’s second hit of the game drove in the Pirates’ fifth run extending the lead back to four in the fifth frame. Brown walked and moved to second on Burleson’s ground out before coming home on Washer’s base hit to right field.

ODU threatened in the sixth with the bases loaded and no outs when Williams relieved Odum on a 1-0 count. Williams got Vinnie Pasquantino to send a liner to shallow right field where Hoover made a diving catch keeping multiple runs off the board. Instead, Jared Hancock tagged up making it a 5-2 ball game.

The Pirates seemed to have put the game out of reach scoring five runs in the eighth inning for a 10-2 lead. Giles drove in a pair with a single up the middle, while Brickhouse plated two with a shot down the right field line with the last run came on Brown’s sac bunt.

Andy Garriola’s grand slam and Morgan’s second home run of the contest in the ninth pulled the Monarchs capped the scoring at 10-7.

Hoover led the Pirates 12-hit attack where they improved to 19-0 on the year when tallying double-digit hits. Baker and Washer added a pair of base knocks while five others collected one including Connor Norby, who had his first career hit in the ninth.

Morgan’s three-hit night led the Monarchs offense after belting a pair of home runs. He was one of four players with multiple hits joining Matt Burch, Jared Hancock and Bryce Windham who each had a pair.
