Bailey goes one on one with new Pirate Coach Joe Dooley

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) -
Brian Bailey:
"We welcome an old friend home today. Joe Dooley, the new basketball coach at East Carolina. First of all, welcome home."

Joe Dooley:
"Good to be back.:

Bailey:
"I tell you what, when you think about everything that went on from 1995 to 1999 and then we fast forward to 2018. That's 19 years. What was your greatest memory of the pirate culture from 95 to 99?"

Dooley:
"Well I think there's a lot of things. I'd walk into the building I remember they had renovated when we beat Charlotte here when Chuckie Robinson had a big game. Just a lot of things that you think about. Othello Meadows hitting a shot and almost getting his head hit down on the concourse when they were carrying him off the court. A lot of things with Eddie Pain, some of those concesses we had here with coach Bane and just a lot of faces and practices and those type of things more than anything."

Bailey:
"Why East Carolina right now?"

Dooley:
"I think its positioned out to continue to get better and I think that the league provides an opportunity that you probably haven't had in the past with the multiple-bid league. It's a great league and I think we've got a lot of work to do. I think the university understands that being good in basketball helps."

Bailey:
"Is the budget where you need it to be to get some of those things done?"

Dooley:
"It's not exactly where it needs to be, but it's moving that way and I think that it's got to be a progressional deal. I understood that talk with I think Dave and Lee understand the importance of I think the chancellor understands that some of things are important. Now we've moved the needle. We've got all of where we want to get it? No. I think they know that in order to be good in basketball we need to move the needle a little bit more."

Bailey:
"What is some of the things that you need to get accomplished right away in order to have success next year?"

Dooley:
"Well I think the biggest thing will be filling out the roster. We'll get in there and talk with the guys. Make sure that we've got everybody on the same page. Obviously we've had some attrition around the season, but I do think at this point, I spoke with the recruits and their all on baord as of right now and that could change in a second, it could change in not a second but a mili-second, but I do think that those things are all important to continue to recruit and get a staff in."

Bailey:
"How long will it take you to get your staff together?"

Dooley:
"Hopefully in the next week or so. We've got some ideas and we just have to go through HR and some things and you know obviously some of these guys are still employed and you have to get them in the interview process and those type of things."

Bailey:
"I got to ask you this. Are you headed over to the mall for lunch because we spent a lot of lunches at the mall back in the past didn't we?"

Dooley:
"It's amazing how we didn't solve more of the worlds problems then and we probably still can't solve any of them, but over a slice of Sbarro or  Chick-Fil-A I think we had about a million different discussions at lunch."

Bailey:
"We most certainly did. It's a new Pirate basketball coach , welcoming a friend home. Joe Dooley."
