GREENVILLE, N.C. – ECU will make its 30th NCAA Regional appearance and fourth in the last five years after earning a No. 1 seed in the Greenville Regional in this year’s NCAA Baseball Championships.
Monday’s selection marks the seventh time in school history the Pirates garnered the top seed in a regional (1999 – Baton Rouge, La., 2000 – Lafayette, La., 2001 – Wilson, N.C., 2004 – Kinston, N.C., 2009 – Greenville, N.C., 2018 – Greenville, N.C.) and the second consecutive year with a Top 16 overall seed with their No. 10 selection this season (No. 12 in 2018). ECU has qualified for regional competition in 16 of the last 21 seasons and four times during head coach Cliff Godwin’s five-year tenure after traveling to the Coral Gables (Fla.) Regional in 2015, Charlottesville (Va.) Regional in 2016 and hosting last year in Greenville.
The Pirates (43-15), who will host their third regional at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium, will square off against No. 4 Quinnipiac (29-27) in the first round of regional play on Friday, May 31 at 6 p.m. (ET), while No. 2 NC State (42-17) will face No. 3 Campbell (35-19) at 12 noon.
In recent year the Pirates have faced two of the three clubs competing in the Greenville regional, most recently splitting a home-and-home series with Campbell (Feb. 20 and May 14) with each team winning on their home field. The Pirates and the Wolfpack have met 108 times in the two programs history with the last coming in 2017 in Raleigh. ECU and Quinnipiac have played just once, which was during the 2008 season.
Of the 64 teams announced Monday, the Pirates own a 12-6 overall record in 2019 against nine institutions: Campbell (1-1), Cincinnati (3-0), Duke (1-1), Mississippi State (0-1), North Carolina (1-0), Ole Miss (1-0), UConn (3-0), UCLA (0-3) and UNCW (2-0).
