New Pirate head coach Mike Houston welcomed the 1978 Independence Bowl championship team back to Greenville today for the squad’s 40th anniversary of the victory.

“It’s great to see everyone,” said Houston. “We want this squad to help us turn things around and get back to Dowdy-Ficklen stadium rocking again!”

Many of the stars of the ’78 team were in town for the event. Former Pirate coach Pat Dye joined the group via the telephone.

“It was just great to see everyone,” said former star running back Tony Collins. “That’s what you miss the most about not playing football, being around all of these great guys.”
