Pirate softball slips past UConn, 2-1

STORRS, CT (WNCT) -  Freshman RHP Whitney Sanford threw a complete game and senior Meredith Burroughs hit her team-leading 11th home run of the season to lift ECU past UConn 2-1 in an American Athletic Conference series opener at Burrill Family Field.

The teams will conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at Noon due to the threat of inclement weather in the forecast Sunday.

ECU – 17-24 (3-7 AAC)

UConn – 15-26 (2-8 AAC)

How it Happened

ECU opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when freshman Tyler King led off reaching third on a fielding error in left field and scored via a sacrifice fly off the bat of classmate Ashleigh Inae. Senior Meredith Burroughs then recorded her 11th home run of the season to extend the Pirate lead to 2-0.

The Huskies cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth, using a Samantha Barnett RBI double to make the score 2-1. UConn then loaded the bases, but Sanford induced a foul out to left field to terminate the threat. Both pitchers settled in from there as ECU claimed the one-run victory.
