Pirates season ends at hands of UNCW after lengthy weather delay

No. 4 seed UNCW scored nine runs in the fifth inning Sunday after a lengthy rain delay to rally past top seed ECU 9-7 in an elimination game at the NCAA Greenville Regional.
 
The Pirates’ season ends with a 44-18 overall record while the Seahawks improve to 39-22 in advance of Monday’s regional championship game against No. 2 seed South Carolina.
 
Freshman Alec Burleson rapped out two hits, scored a run and drove in a pair to lead the ECU offense while senior Drew Henrickson contributed two hits, a run scored and a RBI. Noah Bridges paced UNCW with three hits, a run scored and a RBI.
 
Senior LHP Ryan Ross (4-5) was tagged with the loss on the mound, allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout in 0.2 innings of work. Henry Ryan (3-0) picked up the win for the Seahawks after tossing an inning and surrendering two runs on one hit with a walk. Blake Morgan recorded his first save of the season by throwing the final four innings. He was charged with two runs on one hit while walking three batters and striking out four.
 
The Pirates jumped on top in the second inning with three runs off four hits. Burleson singled up the middle to lead off the frame before junior Connor Litton roped a double to center. Junior Turner Brownfollowed with a two-run single up the middle and classmate Dwanya Williams-Sutton capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly that plated Brown.
 
Following a five hour and nine-minute weather delay, ECU added to its advantage in the top of the fifth inning. Williams-Sutton was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a groundout. Henrickson then singled to center to plate Williams-Sutton and stole third base before redshirt sophomore Jake Washerdrew a walk. A fielder’s choice play allowed Henrickson to cross home plate to leave the Pirates with a 5-0 lead.
 
Jackson Meadows began the fifth inning with a single which was one of eight hits in the frame that resulted in nine runs for UNCW. ECU plated a pair in the top of the seventh, but could not complete the comeback in the end.
