For the second consecutive week, ECU’s Jayden Gardner has been named The American Freshman-of-the-Week league officials announced on Monday.
This is the fourth weekly honor for the rookie, matching B.J. Tyson and Shawn Williams for most by an ECU freshman and leaving him two honors shy of matching Dedric Lawson’s record of six weekly accolades at Memphis during the 2015-16 season. The Wake Forest native was also honored on Nov. 12, Dec. 3 and Jan. 14.
In the Pirates’ lone game last week, Gardner scored 27 points – including 21 in the second half – grabbed eight rebounds and handed out eight assists at home against Temple. He finished the game 8-of-17 from the field and 10-of-12 at the free throw line, sinking 10 or more free throws in a game for the fifth time, while playing 35 minutes.
Gardner has scored 25 or more points in a game six times this season, tops in The American.
Gardner leads the conference in scoring at 19.8 points per game and is fifth in rebounding with 9.4 rebounds per game. He ranks second among all NCAA Division I players with 121 free throws made and first with 159 free throw attempts.
Gardner will lead the Pirates back onto the court Wednesday, Jan. 23, against No. 17 Houston at the Fertitta Center on the campus of the University of Houston. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. EST and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
