Pirates gearing up for rivalry match up with UNC

Sports

On Saturday, ECU and UNC will meet on the football field for the 18th time. North Carolina leads the all-time series 12-4-1. The tie came back in 1979 when the two teams scored 24 points a piece in Chapel Hill.

More recently the Pirates have won the las two meetings (2013 and 2014). The Pirates have outscored the Tar Heels 125-72 combine in the those last two games.

ECU head coach Scottie Montgomery has never had a fond place in his heart for UNC as Montgomery played his college football at Duke. His feelings haven’t changed since taking over the Pirate program.

That’s a huge rival for all of us, it’s been a huge rival of mine for just about all of my life,” said Montgomery. “These young men, the moment they inked to come here to be Pirates, they understand the rivalry.”

The Pirates players feel the same way their coach does.

“To me, this rivalry means everything,” said senior offensive lineman, Garrett McGhin. “Kind of do more with less here at East Carolina. Seems like we never have the respect of anybody. Even when we beat teams that we shouldn’t, they still talk crap, seems like we never get respect so I like to think of us as a bunch of blue collar guys that go out there and do the hard work and we are looking forward to bringing it to UNC this week.”

Kickoff at Dowdy-Ficklen stadium is set for 3:30 p.m.
