State high school football playoffs: J.H. Rose, Tarboro, Wallace-Rose Hill back in state finals

Touchdown Friday

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Make that three in the state finals.

Tarboro’s football team, the defending Class 1-AA state champs, beat Pender County at home on Friday, 22-12, to advance to the Class 1-A state title. It’s the fifth straight year the Vikings have made it to the state finals.

Tarboro will face Mitchell next Saturday at noon at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.

In Class 2-A, another familiar face is back in the state title game. Wallace-Rose Hill outlasted Princeton to take the East Regional title. The Bulldogs will face Shelby on Dec. 11 at 3 p.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.

Wallace-Rose Hill won the Class 2-A state title in the 2017 season, beating Reidsville, 35-28, in overtime.

J.H. Rose punched its ticket to the Class 3-A state final with a 35-28 win over Big Carolina Conference foe Jacksonville. Rose had a huge night in part to the performance of running back Michael Allen, an NC State commit, who had four touchdowns.

Chris Miller, who writes for The Daily News in Jacksonville, reports Allen finished with 200 yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries. Jacksonville senior quarterback Josh Benton had 17 carries for 288 yards.

Rose is making its first trip to the state final since 2015 when the Rampants lost 27-20 to Charlotte Catholic in the 4-A title game. Rose won four straight Class 4-A state titles in 2003-2006.

The Rampants, who started the season 0-3, will face Dudley in the 3-A title game on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.

In 4-A, Cardinal Gibbons will be heading to the state finals for the third straight time after outlasting Rolesville in the East Regional final. Gibbons will face Chambers in the title game.

For four high school football teams in the Eastern North Carolina area, Friday night is another big night.

Tarboro (12-1), Wallace-Rose Hill (12-2), J.H. Rose (10-4) and Jacksonville (11-2) will be playing for a spot in next week’s state championships. The respective teams have advanced to the East Regional finals after wins last week.

Tarboro will be the only team looking to make a return trip to the state finals as the defending Class 1-AA champions. However, each program has been to the state finals at one point in school history.
