Anisa Sakile explores Bird Watching “Birding” and speaks with an local expert.

First thing’s first! If you’ve ever wondered the difference between bird watching, birding, and birder… you’re not alone! Scott Anderson, Bird Biologist with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission says not to get hung up on titles.

People enjoy birds in all different kinds of ways.

Scott Anderson

He says there’s no “right” way to bird watch, and with over 470 species of birds living in NC through the year, they might be harder to identify than you think. Scott recommends downloading the free app Merlin Bird ID, to help you get started. One of Scott’s projects with the North Carolina Wildlife Commission is the North Carolina Birding Trail. They help connect people bird watching across the state, and are a great resource for any questions you may have about the hobby.

You can connect with the North Carolina Birding Trail on FACEBOOK, or on their WEBSITE.
