LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — MGM Resorts International sent a letter company-wide that revealed “several” employees have tested presumptive positive for the virus. MGM President and COO Bill Hornbuckle also addressed layoffs and closures in the document.

“We are now learning that several of our employees have tested presumptive positive for the coronavirus, and we expect that there will be more in the coming days,” the letter reads in part.

The company said around 150 food and beverage outlets will close and spas and salons will suspend operations Monday.

According to the letter, furloughs and layoffs will begin next week.

“We are working diligently to minimize the impact on our employees through furloughs and layoffs, which will begin next week.”

Hornbuckle said Flexible Time Off eligible employees on furlough for two weeks will be paid, and hourly employees “can use all available Paid Time Off in their bank.”

Employees whose departments can work from home have been recommended to do so.

MGM Resorts International is closely monitoring the global health response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) and guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention and the World Health Organization.

MGM Resorts is following the guidelines from these agencies as well as those provided by the local health departments where we operate.

The health and safety of our guests and employees is our highest priority and we have taken measures to combat the potential impacts on our resorts and facilities. In addition to continually upholding MGM Resorts’ high standards of cleanliness, maintenance and sanitation at our properties, we’ve implemented temporary enhanced cleaning procedures and protocols. They include:

  • Placing hand sanitizer dispensing stations in high-traffic, visible areas such as entrances, exits, elevator landings, and hotel lobbies.
  • Increasing the frequency of disinfectant procedures, with focus on:
    • Faucets and toilet flush levers
    • Doorknobs and locks
    • Entrance and exit doors and door handles
    • Handrails
    • Slot machines handles and armrests
    • Elevator buttons
    • Light switches

We are continuing to communicate with our employees and guests on the guidance for prevention. That guidance remains:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick

Incident Response

In the event of a coronavirus case involving one of our properties, MGM Resorts implements our health and safety protocol – immediately working with relevant health authorities to determine the facts and implement the proper guidance and procedures. Access to the room remains restricted as it undergoes this comprehensive cleaning and disinfectant process.
