Your Local Election Headquarters

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – State Senator Harry Brown is stepping down from his position in the General Assembly, representing District 6.

Democrat Ike Johnson and Republican Michael Lazzara are vying for that seat, representing part of Jones and Onslow Counties.

9OYS reporter Camila Barco met up with the candidates to talk about the issues they support.

1. Why did you decide to run for N.C. Senate District 6?

2. Broadband access is one, if not the biggest problem counties in eastern North Carolina, like Jones and Onslow face. If elected, what is your plan to expand internet access across these counties?

3. What would be your top priority as the N.C. Senate for District 6?

4. Teacher pay has been a topic of discussion for years. What’s your message to educators right now?

5. Recently, the state’s Department of Health and Human Services and Public Safety sent a letter to several counties including Onslow — asking to help slow the spread of the virus by promoting the 3 W’s and considering local actions to improve compliance with executive orders. Should counties and/or cities like Jacksonville fine people when not working a mask, holding large gatherings?

6. How will you ensure funding continues to be a priority to people right now who have lost their jobs, are back up on rent, etc.?

7. How do you plan to work with the opposing party when it comes to passing legislation in the General Assembly?

8. What makes you the best fit to serve the people of Jones and Onslow counties?
